Photonics Engineer - Job Specification
Optalysys is developing optical computing technology which performs Fourier transform-based operations at resolutions and speeds far beyond the capabilities of conventional processors, whilst consuming only a fraction of the equivalent electricity.
We are seeking photonics engineers to develop and execute creative R&D projects involving novel semiconductor based optical devices and integrated systems-on-a-chip for next-generation computing. Successful candidates will be conducting detailed theoretical analysis, modeling, and design of semiconductor optics and waveguides, photonic devices, and systems. They will work with the team to develop photonic and electrical testbeds for evaluating device and system performance and perform optical and electrical testing. Candidates must be able to research technical topics, give technical presentations, and write technical proposals.
There are positions open at both our U.K. headquarters in Yorkshire and our U.S. subsidiary based in Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
BSc, MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering or related discipline.
Solid knowledge of opto-electronic device physics, including ability to relate basic material and physical characteristics to device performance
Understanding of free-space optics, guided-wave optics, micro-optics.
In-depth knowledge of optical components and optical bench-top assemblies.
Strong desire to learn new technologies and flexibility to change from one project to another quickly.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and to work with other technical teams to develop a suite of products and solutions.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and effectively across geographically displaced teams.
Creative thinker, analytical and problem solver.
Enthusiasm and ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced, changing environment.
Positions are based in the U.K. Yorkshire office and at our U.S. subsidiary in Reno, Nevada, USA. Candidates must have permission to work in the U.K. or U.S. respectively at the time of starting their employment.
Some travel may be required.
Experience in semiconductor optics, waveguides, semiconductor materials, photonic integrated circuits and systems
Previous experience in photonics and photonic systems design and test.
Extensive experience with multi-physics simulation (both device and optical system), computer-aided design and layout, micro/nano fabrication, and test.
Experience with free-space optics, fiber optics, photonic systems design and experimentation (optical sources and detectors, free-space optics, optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, fiber splicers).
Knowledge of optical lens design and microlens design.
Hands-on fabrication and processing experience of semiconductor materials for photonic devices.
Experience with data acquisition tools using LabVIEW and Matlab.
Design experience using CAD tools, such as AutoCAD and Inventor.
Knowledge of photonic device design, modeling, fabrication, and testing.
Experience with conventional and alternative computer processing hardware.
